The question frequently comes up related to the question of handgun price and performance. Essentially, it is typically expressed as something along the lines of:
- “What’s the best deal in pistols?”
- “I only have $400 to spend; what’s the best choice?”
- “What’s the best handgun for the money?”
There’s a lot of choices out there, but my pick is this:
It’s the Sig SP2022.
When you look at the feature set, it’s pretty standard in today’s market: polymer framed single action/double action mid-size pistol w/ a decocker and accessory rail. Magazine capacity is 15 rounds in 9mm; the .40 S&W version holds 12 rounds. It’s a solid pistol, the choice of French law enforcement and the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command at Rock Island Arsenal. Of course, it’s Sig quality. And, here’s the kicker; it’s cheap. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of price. The “big box” stores routinely offer these for $399. CDNN Investments, as of this writing, has them for $369 in either caliber. My own personal SP2022 has night sights and was purchased on Auction Arms last year, new in box, from a dealer out east for $339.
It’s a solid pistol. In fact, it’s more than that… it’s a very nice pistol. It has a nice trigger pull in both DA and SA. Mine, as shown in previous posts, shows decent accuracy in my hands (in more skilled hands it would likely do more). And, again, it’s UNDER $400!!!!
While I can’t say that it’s my favorite pistol of all time, it’s a solid handgun and I’ve found no reason not to like it. And for under $400, I don’t think it can be beat.
Here’s a couple more pics of mine.
